The following is an updated announcement from the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board (ODOB) regarding the move to Covid-19 Alert Level 3 on Tuesday 28 April
FROM THE ODOB BOARD
As you will be aware the Government has indicated a move to Alert Level 3 at 11:59 pm on Monday 27 April 2020. The Board has been awaiting confirmation and clarity from the Ministry of Health (MoH) on how dispensing opticians and optometrists will be placed. This was received overnight as well as some further detail this afternoon.
The Board’s role under the HPCA Act is to protect the health and safety of the public by providing for mechanisms to ensure that dispensing opticians and optometrists are competent and fit to practise, and provide guidance on MoH advice during this pandemic. As a registered health practitioner, you must not endanger the health and safety of members of the public.
The Ministry of Health has acknowledged that it has been a difficult time for the allied health sector. We must remain vigilant in preventing the spread of Covid-19. At all times you need to remember the goal is to eliminate Covid-19 from Aotearoa New Zealand, so that we can live and work free from this disease.
To ensure practitioners are fit and safe to practise we would like to advise as a health practitioner:
- If you are considered in a high-risk category, the Government encourages you to stay at home where possible
- You should not work in a public setting, if you are unwell. In this situation, you should stand down from work, self-isolate, and be assessed as a patient by a medical professional. Healthcare workers with respiratory or influenza-like symptoms who are in close contact with patients (ie. less than two metres distance for more than 15 minutes) should be tested for Covid-19 and other potential causes of their illness
- You should self-contact trace and log all your movements
- Allied Health Services recommend all health practitioners have the influenza (flu) vaccine when possible
- Ensure you consider your mental wellbeing and are safe and fit to practise
- You must have a current APC to practise
