A University of Auckland optometry graduate has been sentenced to 10 months' home detention after making and publishing intimate recordings of people, including fellow students, for several years.
Greg Park pled guilty to 20 charges following the discovery of recordings on a laptop during a police search of his home in December 2021. Judge Jane Lovell-Smith dismissed Park’s application to have his name suppressed at the time. During his March 2023 sentencing, Manukau District Court heard Park, now 24, began secretly taking photos and videos when he was 16 or 17 years old. The prosecution pressed for a jail term, citing the volume of images and videos, Park’s premeditation and the impact on his young female victims.
A former New Zealand Optometry Student Society member, the court was told Park led a student association and organised two trips in 2021. For each trip, Park arrived early to set up cameras hidden in bathrooms, filming his victims showering and using the toilet. He later uploaded the recordings to porn sites.
