A study by the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the UK has demonstrated the safety of robot-assisted subretinal drug delivery.
OCT-guided injection of tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) was robot-assisted in six patients undergoing vitreoretinal surgery for macular haemorrhage secondary to neovascular age-related macular degeneration, while the control group of six had completely manual surgery.
Researchers reported that the use of Dutch medical robotics company Preceyes BV’s device was safe, well tolerated and total surgery time was not significantly different to the control arms.
