Optometry Board of Australia (OBA) has updated the guidelines for use of scheduled medicines for optometrists.
The Board said the proposed revisions are minor, will benefit public safety and are intended to help endorsed optometrists to deliver timely, safe and quality health services.
The Board’s new proposed revisions include Ganciclovir (eye ointment) as a new addition under section four anti-infectives, in the event it becomes approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in the future. Antazoline, Azelastine, Ketotifen and Levocabastine are now correctly categorised under decongestants/anti-allergics, not anti-inflammatories and the concentration of Phenylephrine has been amended from 1% to 2.5% or less to reflect the standard concentration produced for dilation and cycloplegia.
