The 2022-2028 Global Vision Care Market Research and Forecast report said the rise in geriatric population, technological advancements in eyecare and the increase in electronic device use are all major factors in the market’s compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.4%.
While the report’s authors said this growth is tempered by a shift towards refractive eye surgeries, the increased prevalence of eye disease in rural areas and the appetite for sunglasses represents “an opportunity for market players”. Government initiatives to counter an estimated 108 million people going blind by 2050 is forecast to foster further growth, they said.
The report also highlighted Covid-19’s role in increasing screen time, with, for example, college students attending online classes experiencing headaches, blurred vision and dry eyes. A surge in online gaming and social media use has also been observed, which could have weakened eye muscles, it said.
