A new HRC-funded research project at the University of Auckland is seeking eyecare providers’ perspectives on outreach work via an online survey.
School of Optometry and Vision Science (SOVS) research fellow Dr Lucy Goodman said the research team’s main aim is to develop a mechanism that makes it easier for more providers to participate in outreach in the future. “We recognise that many providers are already doing some great work delivering outreach services to underserved groups. Our aim is to work alongside these providers and others who are interested to better understand how outreach eyecare can be delivered most effectively,” she said.
For example, the team wants to understand the level of support for outreach as a model of care, how many providers are interested in being involved and what barriers currently exist, said Dr Goodman. “We are also interested in exploring potential solutions, such as whether public funding could support greater participation.”
She said the SOVS team welcomes a wide range of responses and participants do not need to have prior experience with outreach or a specific interest in equity to take part. “The survey results will help us gauge the level of support for outreach eyecare within the sector and guide the next stages of the project. We plan to share the findings through public-facing channels to inform policymakers and funders.”
The survey also serves as an opportunity for researchers to connect with the profession, she explained. “We are keen to engage further with providers who are interested in collaborating with us as the project develops,” said Dr Goodman
