The Centre for Eye Research Australia has found that long-term use of the statin rosuvastatin was associated with a higher risk of glaucoma onset.
The 10-year study used the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme data of patients aged ≥45 who had at least three claims for antiglaucoma medications. Researchers found that using rosuvastatin (Crestor, Rosulip, Zuvamor) for more than three years was associated with a higher risk of developing glaucoma. The study did not find an association between other statins and glaucoma.
In 2018 rosuvastatin was prescribed to 5.3 million Americans at high risk of cardiovascular disease and with abnormal lipids.
