Glaucoma New Zealand (GNZ) has announced a Gordon Sanderson Scholarship in memory of Associate Professor Gordon Sanderson who died earlier this year.
“Teaching was both a vocation and passion for Gordon and his influence on a generation of medical and optometry students has been immense,” explained Professor Helen Danesh-Meyer, GNZ chair and founding trustee, and head of academic glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Auckland. “Gordon was the recipient of the Prime Minister's Supreme Award for Sustained Tertiary Teaching in 2014 and the only optometrist to be awarded an honorary RANZCO Fellowship, which is a reflection of his achievement in building bridges between optometry and ophthalmology.”
A/Prof Sanderson was also a well-known low-vision champion and passionate about preventing blindness from glaucoma. He was a Founding Trustee of GNZ.
The intention of GNZ’s Gordon Sanderson Scholarship is to build on A/Prof Sanderson’s legacy and continue his work, said Prof Danesh-Meyer. It will be awarded annually to an optometry or medical trainee for research or education into glaucoma. Eligible recipients will be from the Universities of Auckland, Otago or Sydney as these are the institutions with which A/Prof Sanderson had well-developed and personal connections.
