A US study of diabetic children, published in Jama Ophthalmology, has found that those with type-2 diabetes (T2D) had nearly double the risk of developing retinopathy compared to those with type-1 (T1D). Further, authors noted pars plana vitrectomy occurred within a shorter diabetes duration for T2D children compared to those with T1D.
The medical record review included all residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota (95.7% white), who were diagnosed with diabetes before they were 22 years old from 1970-2019. Authors concluded children with T2D may require ophthalmoscopic evaluations at least as frequently as those with T1D.
