Moorfields Eye Hospital is trialling a new laser procedure to treat glaucoma that takes just one second.
The Belkin laser offers a non-invasive, non-contact procedure performed with automated laser technology delivering 100 spots to the trabecular meshwork through the limbus in just 1.2 seconds. “It differs from current laser treatment for glaucoma as it doesn’t require a lens to be touching the eye, making the procedure more comfortable for patients,” said Dr Gus Gazzard, director of Moorfields’ glaucoma service.
Manufacturer Belkin Laser said it’s designed to make glaucoma laser treatment accessible through general ophthalmologists. “Our ultimate goal is to have Belkin Laser used by any medical personnel after a few minutes of training. The ease of use and the inexpensiveness of the Belkin Laser treatment will solve the availability problem of glaucoma therapy everywhere in the world.”
