The RANZCO New Zealand branch annual scientific meeting from 22 April 2022 features local and international speakers, including keynotes Professor Helen Danesh-Meyer, Associate Professor Samantha Fraser-Bell, Nicola Dunlop, Dr Rachael Niederer and Associate Professor Bruce Hadden.
Professor Helen Danesh-Meyer
Auckland-based glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmology specialist Prof Danesh-Meyer divides her time between clinical practice and research. She is head of the Academic Neuro-Ophthalmology and Glaucoma Research Unit at the New Zealand National Eye Centre and serves on the board of numerous international research and educational organisations, including as chair of RANZCO’s Women in Ophthalmology group and Glaucoma New Zealand. She has published more than 200 papers and co-authored major textbooks in neuro-ophthalmology and glaucoma. Her contribution to ophthalmology was recently recognised when she was named as one of the world’s top 100 women in ophthalmology in The Ophthalmologist’s first-ever female power list.
At RANZCO NZ’s 2022 conference, Prof Danesh-Meyer will give the Dorothy Potter Medal Lecture, ‘An eye on gender equality’, and cover several topics including Covid and the eye; myths and realities of glaucoma; and myths, lies and lessons of neuro-ophthalmology.
Reflecting on her Dorothy Potter Lecture, Prof Danesh-Meyer commended Professor Charles McGhee, chair of the scientific committee, and the convenors of this year’s branch meeting, saying it is wonderful to see the strong line-up of women speakers. “There has never been a doubt that Australia and New Zealand have internationally recognised female academics in all subspecialties. Charles has always been a huge advocate for promoting capable women and this is evident when one looks at the number of full professors in the department of ophthalmology – the women outnumber the men! So, in essence, the RANZCO NZ Branch is catching up with the academic scene in New Zealand.”
