The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) welcomes the new Closing the Gap Agreement announced 30 July 2020.
For the first time, there will be targets focused on reducing incarceration rates, improving housing quality and tackling the unacceptably high suicide rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The new targets have arisen through Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership and extensive consultation with communities across Australia.
“We look forward to supporting the new Closing the Gap partnership through our collaborations with government and the health sector to improve eye health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” RANZCO said in a statement.
RANZCO said it is committed to the reconciliation process with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and launched a reconciliation action plan in November 2019.
